GLWY Episode 02: What Remains of Edith Finch
Tonight Mel and S3VYN dove into “What Remains of Edith Finch” for the first time. The stream and video ended up covering a full play-through. Unfortunately, part of the video had to be muted because of copyrighted music (of all things, for a Tchaikovsky composition). Check out the video and the review below!
Mel’s Review
“What remains of Edith Finch” was surprising, fun and sad. It was as if we were immersed in a family story more than playing a video game. The story was shocking and strange. I actually laughed pretty often because I couldn’t believe what had just happened. The narration was done so well you felt as though you were there with them. I would recommend this game to anyone wanting to hang out with some friends and become part of a really interesting, fun story.
S3VYN’s Review
If you’re looking for an interactive novel-style game, “What Remains of Edith Finch” may be worth a couple of hours of your time. It’s hard to give a review without spoilers, so I’ll stick to game mechanics and general feelings.
In this game, you participate in a narrative. There really isn’t much in the way of puzzles or choices, but that isn’t necessarily a criticism. The game tracks the main character as they uncover more and more about their family history while taking care to tell the story in beautiful visuals, sounds, and music. At times it’s surprising, and fun, but also overwhelmingly somber. The player actively participates in some moments where they must take action to move the story forward, and those actions create moments of acute emotion and consideration. For me, it worked, and I found myself still pondering the game days later.
