Velos

Today we cover the Tier 9 Premium European Destroyer Velos. She will be available in World of Warships as of October 21st, 2022, and will be acquired initially through a campaign, and eventually through the Premium Shop for doubloons.

Quick Overview

As a converted Fletcher class, the closest comparison is a Fletcher or Benson. The major difference is less torpedoes and fantastic reload for both torpedoes and guns. The torpedoes have decent range, do excellent damage, and can be built to reload very quickly, but there’s only one quintuple launcher. The guns are exactly what you’d expect from the USN tech tree line.

If you like “seek and destroy” destroyer playstyles, this is a good candidate for it.

Recommended Play Style

Anyone accustomed to the USN Destroyer tech tree line will recognize Velos. A converted Fletcher, she can be built out (as I did above) with agility to feel more like a Benson. This build gives the ship a lot of options to move into, and out of, position quickly while cutting the rudder back and forth to launch torpedoes every ~40 seconds.

It’s tempting to try a gunboat build in this ship, but there are just too many better options in that segment. The American 5″ guns underperform at high tiers due to low fire chance and very low alpha damage due to low penetration. I recommend sticking with torpedoes and using the fast-reload guns as a situational bonus.

Stay at torpedo range and harass areas of control. The torpedoes hit hard, so you only need to land a few to stack up damage. Use smoke and speed boost to escape pursuing destroyers or position for farming battleships. The guns won’t do much in a knife fight, so pay attention to avoid getting too close to enemies.
